Liberty Tavern is located in the Downtown Omaha Hilton, prime restaurant real estate due to its proximity to the convention center and new stadium. As part of a gift for their 25th wedding anniversary my parents received a dinner at Liberty Tavern, which my brother and I were more than happy to crash. We started with two salads- beet and caprese. The beet salad, a special, was easily the highlight of the meal for most of us- the candied ginger cashews married perfectly with the beets and bright vinaigrette. And who doesn’t love a tarte filled with goat cheese? The caprese salad was also good- the basil pesto was a nice touch. My brother’s mac & cheese was delicious, however it had nothing on Marks! The main courses were hit and miss; my dad and grandmother loved their cheese raviolis, and my mom was equally pleased with her pasta topped with Greek-style ingredients like Kalamata olives, feta and avocado. However my brother’s margherita pizza paled in comparison to other pizzas available around Omaha, and my coq a vin was definitely the most disappointing dish of the meal. There was way too much gravy, and the gnocchi floated around in the murky brown liquid instead of being topped with it, as I had imagined. Desserts finished out the meal on a positive note- the chef himself came by to greet us during the meal, and upon hearing that we were celebrating my parent’s 25th anniversary, presented them with a lovely dessert medley. The bread pudding, Liberty Tavern’s signature dessert, had my mom singing praises for much of the evening, as did the créme brûlée (which I then went on to get in a full size- delicious!). My brother finished out the meal with apple pie, which he thoroughly enjoyed as well. So I’m left with mixed feelings on Liberty Tavern- it is excessively expensive and fails to impress on every dish; a dangerous move when there are so many awesome restaurants in downtown Omaha. My overall verdict? Go for drinks, appetizers and dessert (apps and zerts, if you will)- skip the main course and save yourself some money and room for the delectable bread pudding!
