Herman the German Friendship Cake – Oh.. and Happy Birthday to Us!

It’s Boy Meets Girl Meets Food’s second birthday! It has been another exciting year for us, and we are so glad to have shared it with all of you! We would not still be going without you all, so thanks for your support- and what better way to celebrate than with our old friend Herman, the German friendship cake..

Herman is a sourdough cake and therefore takes a little bit more prep than your average cake, but the results are delish. The idea of this cake is to create a yeasty starter mix and let it ferment for ten days, then once ready you use 1/4 of the mixture to create Herman and give 1/4 of the mixture to each of three friends and so the cycle continues. Personally I can’t think of a better way of saying “let’s be friends” than with a bubbling mass of fermented goop, can you?

I won’t write the instructions here as Herman has his own website.. but I’ll walk you through the baking process with pictures – http://www.hermanthegermanfriendshipcake.com/

I stuck to the original apple and cinnamon recipe, however you will find plenty of other cake recipes on the website. Thanks again!
